Alexander Ewing, his wife and a son were originally buried on the Ewing land, but it was determined to be too near the Wabash and Erie Canal construction and they were moved to a public graveyard in 1847 by Alexander's sons. When the Lindenwood Cemetery was incorporated in 1859, many local families began to move their dead to this location, as did the Ewings.

The tallest, most costly monument in Lindenwood Cemetery marks the graves of 20 members of the Ewing Family, one of the most notable families in Fort Wayne. Placed in 1870, the cost of the monument at that time was $25,000. It was then said to be the finest and largest single shaft of Scotch granite in America. The granite base is 8 ft square and it is 38 ft high.
